Leadership Continuity
Plan for Elder Selection and Transition
BASIS
The Elders recognize that the congregation needs continuity in leadership. This means that new Elders will be selected, and serving Elders will transition to other roles, as needed. These changes are a healthy and necessary part of the life of the congregation.
PLAN
The Elders anticipate performing a review of their service and roles, on an as needed basis, but typically about once every two years. This review will be performed by the serving Elders, individually and collectively.
- Individual Elders will consider the needs of the congregation, their personal spiritual direction, their resources, their commitments, and their future plans. During this individual review, an Elder may find that he is called to continue serving as an Elder. In contrast, he may find that he needs to resign his role as an Elder. Elders are encouraged, when the need arises, to actively plan for their change from an Elder's role to other service. The Elders individually agree to resign if at any time this would be in the best interest of the spiritual life of the congregation.
- The Elders will collectively consider the needs of the congregation, the availability of additional spiritual leaders, and the anticipated transitions within the group. When a call for additional Elders is warranted, the Elders will initiate an Elder selection process.
- When additional Elders are selected, the congregation will be asked to confirm the leadership role of all Elders, both those that have been serving and those that are newly selected.
- Each Elder will participate in one of two leadership teams. These teams are the Administrative Committee and the Spiritual Development Committee. The Elders will review their participation in these leadership teams as needed, but typically once every year.
