Meet Your Teacher – Laura Espinoza

Ever wonder who those strange people are that you are leaving your kids with each week? Well, now you don’t have to wonder anymore. Meet Laura Espinoza. Laura has been working with the Kid’s Ministry as the Assistant Teacher in the 3/4 Year Old Praise Kids for almost two years straight!

Espinoza-smlTell us a little about you and your family.

I’m married to Rick Espinoza . We’ve been married for 24 years. We have three kids Ricky, Sarah and Samantha. Ricky is 29 and follows his Dad’s footsteps by working in the restaurant business. Sarah is 22 and goes to school full-time for her bachelor’s degree in Sociology at UHCL. My youngest is Samantha. She is in 5th grade and loves playing volleyball. As a family, we like to spend time with each other from playing board games, watching movies, sharing our daily highlights of the day, etc.

How long have you been at Clear Lake?

We found Clear Lake Church of Christ through my sister Elvia who was already attending along with my niece and nephew. We’ve lived in the Clear Lake City area over 8 years and our house is in the neighborhood right across from the Church. We decided to visit and attend one of the services. We liked the Church and the congregation so much that we began attending in October of 2011.

How long have you served in the Kid’s Ministry?

I began serving in the Kid’s Ministry back in the fall of 2013 when my daughter Samantha was entering 4th grade. She liked Praise Kids a great deal, and I decided to volunteer so we could help together.

What is it that you enjoy about serving kids?

I get a great feeling teaching kids because it is rewarding at the end of the class to hear them talk about what they’ve learned. I enjoy seeing how they react to the bible lessons and listening to their responses when asked I asked questions.

What are some of your favorite treats?

I have a sweet tooth so I enjoy any kind of cake, pies, cookies. You name it. I eat it.

Do you have a favorite story about volunteering you would like to share?

There is a very special little boy that comes to our Praise Kids class. He is very rambunctious and he tends to not want to join the class when being asked. One Sunday morning during class, when everybody was sitting down listening to the Bible story, he grabbed a book and began to read “Green Eggs and Ham”. He read to the best of the abilities of a 3 to 4 year old. I became aware that reading the book captured his attention. I began reading it to him slowly then faster as I noticed how much he enjoyed it. He liked it so much that the following Sunday when he came in for class he asked me to read it to him again.

Laura, Rick, Samantha, and Sarah are all members at Clear Lake and all serve in the Kid’s Ministry at Clear Lake. Laura in Praise Kids, Rick in the 5th Grade Bible class, Samantha in Praise Kids and Nursery, and Sarah in the Nursery. You may remember you met Sarah from back in January.

Talk to your kids this week about Laura if she is their teacher. Find a way to encourage or thank her for investing in your children’s Spiritual Formation.
