Beholding the Glory
Is it possible to over-illustrate? I pondered that thought as I prepared this week’s sermon. I had trouble knowing what to keep and what to cut so I finally decided to include them all: veil, flashlight, mirror and tablets of “stone”. My concern was that rather than the point being illuminated thorough the images, it would get lost.
Illustrating the glory of Christ is a bit like illustrating God; all comparisons eventually fall apart. Saul of Tarsus caught a glimpse of the glory of Christ on the road to Damascus and he was never the same. So too, when we catch sight of God’s glory seen in the face of Christ, we are changed.
How can this glory be expressed? How can we communicate it to others? It is best seen in the transformed lives of those who have trained themselves to gaze upon Christ as though studying mirror. Our lives are changed by the Spirit until message and messenger are one. Our lives bear witness to the transforming work of God’s Spirit. We are the best illustration of the glory of Christ as we are changed by his Spirit from glory to glory.
